LAS VEGAS, February 13 – On Jan 25 2019, Thai pop star, Pichayapa "Namsai" Natha, who is a member of the girl group BNK48, was filmed at a rehearsal with a swastika t-shirt, prompting Israel’s deputy ambassador to Thailand, Shapira Smadar, to express her “shock and dismay” over the item of clothing, and tweeting, “Presenting Nazi symbols by the band's singer hurt the feelings of millions around the world, whose relatives were murdered by the Nazis.”

The band later apologized, with the artist, Natha, meeting with the Ambassador of Israel in person to offer her apologies, and the band agreeing to take part in an educational workshop on the Holocaust.

It is clear that the Israeli diplomats remain oblivious to the true meaning of the swastika, which has been a religious and traditional emblem of peace and wellbeing for thousands of years. In its pre-Nazi era use, it was never anti-Semitic or hateful. If the diplomats would be educated about the true meaning of the swastika, the young artist would not have to apologize.

Disgracing the swastika is an outrage to the one billion Hindus and half a billion Buddhists who revere this symbol. The swastika is actually a symbol of unification rather than hateful division, since it has only positive meanings in many cultures around the world. It is also noteworthy that 95 percent of the Thai population is Buddhist and they revere the swastika as a symbol of peace and wellbeing.

In late June each year (June 29 this year), Raelians celebrate “Swastika Rehabilitation Day” worldwide, and the purpose of the events is to inform and educate people about the ancient and peaceful meaning of the swastika.

“It’s a cherished symbol not only by Raelians, for whom it represents infinity in time, but also by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains,” President of Proswastika, Upendra Singh, explained. “Banning a religious symbol is like banning a religion and is an affront to both the members of that religion and a supposedly free society in general.”
